Innovative Partnership Expands Chrysler Canada's Success
Founded as the Chrysler Corporation in 1925, Chrysler Canada Inc. is based in Windsor, Ontario. The company has approximately 9,100 employees across Canada, and is a mainstay of the Ontario economy. Chrysler Canada is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chrysler Group LLC, one of the world's leading automotive companies.
Chrysler's Canadian operations are centered in Ontario, with two vehicle assembly plants in Windsor and Brampton, and a casting plant in Etobicoke. The Windsor Assembly plant produces the award-winning Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country and recently added international right-hand drive models to its line-up. The Brampton Assembly Plant produces the Chrysler 300/300C, the Dodge Charger and the Dodge Challenger.
Integrated with Chrysler's engineering operations, the company maintains an extensive R&D presence in Canada, encouraged by Canada's world-class research facilities, scientific workers and advantageous tax incentives. The University of Windsor/Chrysler Canada Automotive Research and Development Centre (ARDC) was launched in 1996 with an initial investment of $30 million. It was the first partnership of its kind in Canada. The ARDC brings together the University of Windsor, all three levels of government and Chrysler Canada to conduct research and testing for automotive initiatives. With a total investment now exceeding $600 million, the ARDC benefits all partners. The facility has grown to over 200 000 sq. ft. (19,000 sq. m). on a 23 acre (93,080 sq. m.) site and is equipped with six road-test simulators and a range of research and development support facilities, including the Automotive Coatings Research Facility and the Automotive Lighting Research Facility.
As well as hosting post-graduate thesis projects, the ARDC has hosted Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Chairs in Alternative Fuels, Mechanical Engineering Design, and Acoustic Imaging.
