Massive Investment Expands Honda's Canadian Success Story
In 1986, Honda became the first Japanese automaker to establish a production facility in Canada; twelve years later, a second plant was opened. The beginning of operations at their new engine plant in September 2008 establishes HCM as one of Honda's premier manufacturing facilities in the world, representing a total investment of $2.6 billion in Canada.
The state-of-the-art plant manufactures engines from 100% recycled aluminum, much of it sourced from surrounding southern Ontario.
In April 2009, the total number of Canadian-produced Honda passenger cars, SUVs and trucks surpassed 5 million units. HCM attributes its continuing success in Canada to a number of factors. Proximity to markets and suppliers, a highly educated and skilled workforce, a stable investment climate and modern infrastructure have all supported the growth of HCM. The company currently employs more than 4,300 associates, produce up to 390,000 vehicles annually, manufacture parts supplying Honda plants across North America and source $1.4 billion in goods from Canadian suppliers each year.
“Strong support has come from all quarters, including the federal and provincial governments, the local community, our suppliers in Canada, our associates, our dealers, and of course, our customers,” says Honda Motor Chairman Satoshi Aoki. “Based on this partnership and through our continued investment, Honda believes Canada is a great place to do business.”
