Biotechnology Clusters

List of clusters in this sector (text based version)

Canada is committed to becoming one the most innovative and competitive countries in the world.  These initiatives reflect Canada’s determination to be one of the top five countries globally for R&D.

Universities

identified in this cluster map are funded by one of these federal government programs:
  • The Canada Research Chairs, a $300 million per year permanent program to establish 2000 research professorships in universities across the country by 2008.  The initiative supports outstanding researchers breaking new ground in their field.  Attracting and retaining the best and brightest helps to make Canada an international centre for research excellence.
  • The Canada Fund for Innovation (CFI) strengthens the research infrastructure of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals and non-profit research institutions to increase their capacity to conduct world-class research and technology development. CFI provides a maximum of 40% of infrastructure costs for projects meeting the grants criteria — $3.65B since 1997.

Research Centres

The National Research Council (NRC) centres and other publicly or privately-funded research organizations stimulate business opportunities by translating promising research into sophisticated products for market.  The NRC’s 20 institutes have spawned countless innovations and companies since the research facility was established in 1916 to promote engineering and scientific excellence.
