Eidos: Montréal Studio Fuels Success of Leading Video-Game Developer
In 2007, multinational gaming giant Eidos Interactive went hunting for the ideal location for its next development studio. Montréal’s numerous advantages made it an irresistible choice. The city boasts one of the most cosmopolitan populations in the world, a highly skilled workforce, a relatively low cost of living and an exceptionally high quality of life. In addition, many of the city’s academic institutions—at both the secondary and post-secondary levels—offer sophisticated programs in computer animation and game development. These attributes continue to drive growth in Montréal’s gaming industry; the city is now one of the leading development centres in the world.
Today, Eidos-Montréal’s facility is the largest in the company’s international network of studios. More than one-third of Eidos Interactive’s global workforce of approximately 800 people work in Montréal, developing new titles such as Thief 4 and Deus Ex 3. International sales of the Tomb Raider series of games, developed by Eidos Interactive, exceed 28 million copies.
In 2009, Eidos Interactive became part of Square Enix, the Japanese company recognized as an industry giant. Video games (both on- and offline) accounted for approximately one-third of the company’s fiscal 2009 revenues of more than $1.5 billion.
