Business and Investment Environment

  • Real GDP growth of 5.2% for 2008, compared to a 3.6% increase in 2007
  • Real GDP growth rate for 2008 was the second highest among all provinces and territories
  • No governmental debt, no territorial sales tax and a very competitive tax regime
  • Some of the lowest personal income tax rates in Canada and competitive corporate income tax rates
  • Government spends a higher percentage of its annual budget on capital projects than any other Canadian jurisdiction
  • Business is encouraged through many incentive programs such as the Yukon Small Business Investment Tax Credit program which reduces income tax for eligible investors and the Yukon Venture Loan Guarantee Program which helps new and expanding businesses

  • Alongside world-class mineral deposits, there are many rich areas that remain undiscovered. Yukon's government and its private sector partners are actively marketing its mineral wealth to global markets.

Oil & Gas

  • Yukon is a vast land with unexplored oil and gas basins rich in potential.
  • Situated on the periphery of several prolific gas producing regions, many parts of the territory have yet to be explored.

Innovation and Technology

  • A well-developed information infrastructure to support the knowledge-based sector.
  • Over 60 Information Technology related companies developing technologies to overcome the challenges posed by a cold-weather climate and the vast geography.

Tourism

  • Yukon's natural splendour, abundant wildlife, Aboriginal heritage and a multitude of unique outdoor recreation and cultural attractions, draw 300,000 international and domestic tourists every year.
  • Tourism is the largest private sector employer in the Yukon, and roughly 70% of Yukon’s employed population work for businesses that report some level of tourism revenue.
